Kicking off April I decided to apply to shoot a band that I usually wouldn’t. I’ve heard a lot on the music channels recently of Years & Years as they have an album full of huge feel good tracks, and the opportunity to shoot them in a big sold out venue (Manchester Apollo) was too good to turn down. I turned up not knowing much of what to expect from them apart from the first three songs which I checked out on Youtube to get an idea of the lighting etc so I didn’t get caught too off guard photographing them.

As far as shooting them went, the lighting was exceptional, the visibility was great and the movement of the band was perfect to catch the shots I needed. For the photographers the pit was pretty busy as you would have expected, but the majority looked out for each other enabling everyone to get the shots they needed. Unfortunately there was one guy who didn’t quite have the same attitude and decided that leaning on, nudging out of the way, and sticking his head in front of my camera and other photographers was acceptable behavior. But hey, you always come across one muppet every now and then!

As for Years & Years, they put on a brilliant show. They sounded fantastic from start to finish and the character of the front man really lit up the stage as he’s such a nice/likable person. The set had a few blasts of confetti throughout and some pretty cool lighting displays which made everything that little more entertaining to watch!

I’d definitely recommend catching them the next time they are on tour or at a festival. It was well worth the effort to see somebody new for a change!
